Carrillo Recreation Center

Santa Barbara, CA

The Rehabilitation of the City of Santa Barbara’s Carrillo Recreation Center at 100 East Carrillo Street was completed in 2010. The historically significant facility was originally constructed in 1914 and had undergone minor interior and exterior modifications, including a loggia addition in 1925 designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan.

In 1993, the building was designated a City of Santa Barbara Registered Landmark. The facility was renovated to meet current building codes in performance and health standards, including seismic retrofit and Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.) upgrades.

The project achieved a Silver Rating through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program, which is an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance sustainable buildings.

The seismic retrofit and A.D.A. upgrades, including a new elevator, performed on the interior of the building to minimize impact on the original brick veneer exterior, was an important requirement set forth by the client and local Historic Landmarks Commission.
